Niceness, Empathy, & Making Mistakes

Welcome to the January 2020 edition of ‘The Monthly Mindset,’ an email series where Katie Stricker, President and Co-founder, shares a few things she’s thinking about, plus a look into what Sayge is up to.

Workplace trend, innovation, or idea I’m thinking about—
Whenever I talk about psychological safety, I notice that many people conflate psychological safety with being nice. While there’s nothing wrong with being nice, simplifying psychological safety into “niceness” misses the mark. Psychological safety is rooted in conversational turn-taking and empathy, two traits which may seem nice, but it’s more strategic than that.

In a psychologically safe environment, team members can have direct and difficult conversations without offense. And by cultivating psychological safety, employees can strike a happy medium between being a pushover and being aggressive.

Quote I’m thinking about—
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” —Neil Gaiman
